In today’s contest, we are going to share about charities, giving, and “Making Spirits Bright”. Giving is part of this season and we should all be looking for ways to help others. We can do this by buying a coffee for the person behind us or giving it to a charity organization.

As some of you know, my grandson Lucas was born in March 2018 and medically diagnosed with an extremely rare genetic condition called NKH (Non-ketotic hyperglycinemia). Meet my sweet baby boy.

While in the NICU I decided to start the nonprofit Lucas John Foundation. I can remember being in the hospital and seeing so many areas that could be better for families and was determined to help. Lucas’s journey in the first few years has been rough. Many hospitalization and issues with seizures. I have spent the last two years studying everything about gene expression and I am happy to report that he is so much better. Following my belief that “let thy food be thy medicine”, I applied many of the tools and nutrition tips I have learned on my own journey the past 10 years and have implemented them for Lucas. He still has developmental delays. He has a head lag and not sitting up yet at 21 months old. But he is 99% seizure-free now and slowly improves each day. And for that, we are extremely Grateful.

If you would like to help my sweet boy, we are doing a fundraiser Candy Cane Christmas for Lucas and having donors give $5.00 to have their name placed on a candy cane for his personal Christmas tree.

I would love the support of our mission. You can join our event by mark yourself as going (since this is a virtual and live event) it will help us the more people going and sharing get more views. (Click this link) then you can also participate in the awesome raffle and the candy cane fundraiser if you want to give. Candy Canes are 5.00 and raffle tickets are 10.00 which is ten chances to win prizes we had donated by generous sponsors. These include a big screen tv, Apple Airpods, Amazon Echo Show, Massager, gift baskets and more.

Shawna (Nonna) with Lucas

We are passionate about raising awareness and raising the funds for gene therapy for him. There are no medical options so we have to replace the gene.

I have a niece with a genetic disorder and she’s 13 on a feeding tube and stays in a hospital bed with 24 hour nurses. The best thing I can do is offer to stay with her while her parents have a date night.

My story isn’t related to a health issue but one that is near and dear to me as my family was able to help another over the holiday season. Many years ago I was working as a Realtor helping a family sell their condo and move into a bigger home. The sale of their new home fell through leaving them with nowhere to go until the lawyers and banks could communicate and this was right before the holidays. Red Cross put the young family of 5 up in a hotel and my husband and I brought gift cards for meals, toys, and even took the parents to an NHL game on Boxing day to help relieve some of the stress they were feeling. The happiness we were able to bring to this family warmed my heart and even to this day.
