Marinara is a simple sauce which can be used in a host of different recipes.

This quick and easy recipe is always handy to have on hand. Double the batch and freeze for later.

While this recipe is fairly chunky, you can change the consistency of the sauce depending on what type of tomatoes you use. If you want a smoother sauce, you can pulse the diced tomatoes in a food processor. Also works well with canned diced tomatoes.

Want it extra chunky? Make your onions larger pieces. You can also add in diced green peppers and mushrooms.

Homemade Chunky Marinara Sauce

  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tbsp garlic, minced
  • 4 cups fresh tomatoes, diced (larger pieces for extra chunky)
  • 1 Tbsp. Italian Seasonings
  • 1 tsp fresh basil, chopped
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground pepper
  • 1 pinch red pepper flakes for an added kick

Place oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add onions and cook until translucent, stirring occasionally. Move the onions over making room to saute the garlic. Add garlic and saute for about 3 minutes, or until fragrant.

Pour in tomatoes and seasonings. Stir sauce until thoroughly mixed. Bring sauce to a simmer, then cover skillet. Cook for 15-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
