We all want this virus to go away, but there is no magic pill or shot that will cure it. One of the best ways you can prevent or fight this virus is to feed our bodies with immune-boosting foods. As we age, our immune system is more susceptible to weakening, which can lead to serious health problems. Not to mention a weak immune system can be fatal.

We’ve covered a number of little choices that you can do to fight the virus. Read More

There has been a lot of talk about Zinc and COVID-19 lately but before you spend money on a supplement you don’t need, make sure you know a little more about the basics of zinc.

Zinc

Zinc, a nutrient found throughout your body and helps the immune system fight off invading bacteria and viruses.

Food sources include nuts, seeds, oats, organ meats, chicken, shellfish, and legumes like chickpeas, lentils and beans. While nuts, seeds, and meats contain high amounts of zinc, you can even get some zinc from chocolate! A 3.5oz bar of 70–85% dark chocolate contains 3.3 mg of zinc.

What about a zinc supplement?

While you can take it in supplement form, it is best to feed our bodies with food first and as you can see we’ve given you plenty of options.

Zinc deficiency in the U.S. is not as common as developing countries because most diets provide more than the recommended dietary allowance. However, several studies have found the elderly to be at risk for zinc deficiency because there may be a loss of absorption efficiency as we age.

Now, if you decide you want to supplement during this pandemic, you should not take it long-term unless you know if your body is needing it. If you have the virus or are fighting a cold or flu, by all means, add some zinc lozenges or supplements. If you have to make a choice to go to the hospital or try zinc, try a natural way first. It is completely safe to add 15-40 mg of zinc per day but, again, if you are consuming immune-boosting foods, your body should not need it.

Also, keep into consideration our bodies are all different and we should always consider supplements based on our body’s needs. There are tests you can take to determine what your body needs.
